St. Francis of Assisi Novitiate

St. Francis of Assisi Novitiate in Arroyo Grande, Calif., was the setting on July 12, 2024, for the investiture of our three novices: Friars James Muzzey, Patrick Allen, and Paulo Moonjeli.

After being clothed in the habit of our Order, they will remain in California for a year and a day in fraternity, in private and communal prayer, in classes, workshops, seminars, experiencing manual work, and other activities in line with the goals of this stage of formation. Please keep our novices close in prayer. They will profess their first vows on July 15, 2025.

FORMATION

Conventual Franciscan friar formation consists of several phases. The first two phases are the postulancy and the novitiate. The first phase of formation is the postulancy, currently held in Chicago, IL at the St. Bonaventure friary. “Postulant” means “one who asks questions.” The second phase of formation is the Novitiate, currently held in Arroyo Grande, CA. “Novice” means “newcomer” or “beginner.” This phase is held in Arroyo Grande, California at the St. Francis of Assisi Friary. The current novices received the grey habit of the Conventual Franciscans this past weekend. One step at a time, may we answer the call of the Lord.
