Thanks to a generous $50,000 grant from Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR!) and a $41,407.15 contribution from the Viva Francis Foundation, the Conventual Franciscans of California completed an accessible bathroom renovation at St. Joseph of Cupertino Province in Castro Valley, California.

The project included replacing five outdated bathtubs with walk-in showers, installing safety grab bars, and upgrading fixtures to better meet the needs of aging friars and those with mobility challenges.

The renovated bathrooms have significantly improved safety, accessibility, and independence. By reducing the risk of falls, the improvements make daily personal care easier and more comfortable. They also provide a safer environment for friars who require assistance and for those who care for them.

This project reflects our commitment to ensuring that our friars can age with dignity while remaining active members of the Conventual Franciscan community. The renovations support aging in place, enabling our friars to remain in the home and community they have faithfully served for many years.

With fewer physical barriers, our friars can continue participating in communal prayer, shared meals, ministry, and the fraternal life that is central to their vocation. They can also continue sharing their wisdom, pastoral presence, and lifelong commitment to the Gospel with one another and with all those they encounter.

We are deeply grateful to Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR!) Foundation and The Viva Francis Foundation for helping us provide a safer, more accessible, and supportive home where our friars can continue living their vocation with dignity, confidence, and greater independence.
